This morning I woke to a very painful urine infection that brought tears to my eyes and left me dreading to go to the toilet. A few years ago if I was experiencing a urine infection, I would of picked the phone up straight away to get some antibiotics. But with everything I have been learning since starting our environmentally sustainable lifestyle there are always more naturally ways to treat infections before jumping to the doctors to take antibiotics.
Urine infections are caused by bacteria making its way into your ureter. (Your urethra carries urine from your kidneys to your bladder and then carries your urine out of your bladder when you pee.) A urine infection can happen if you hold your in urine for long periods of time instead of going to the toilet, having a catheter fitted and for some women it can happen if you don’t go for a pee after having intercourse.
There are few natural ways to treat a urine infection rather than relying on antibiotics (but please note I am not advising anyone to not go to the doctors when you have a urine infection.)
- Drink Plenty Of Water – I know this sounds pretty obvious but when you are suffering the pain of a urine infection the last thing you want to do is drink glass after glass of water, just to end up being in pain while you have a pee. But drinking plenty of water helps flush the bacteria out of your ureter and will help your body heal from your infection.
- Drink Parsley Water – Parsley water can help relieve the pain you are in with having an infection and speed up the healing process by acting as a diuretic. (A diuretic increases the amount of sodium in your kidneys which results in your kidneys producing more urine and more urine being passed out the body the quicker the bacteria is flushed out of your urethra.) To make parsley water, bring 1 / 2 cups of water to the boil in a saucepan, add 1 cup of cut up fresh parsley and simmer for 6 – 10 minutes allowing the parsley to steep in the water. Once your parsley has simmered take of the heat and strain into your cup and either drink hot or cold.
- Drink Cranberry Juice – Cranberry juice (unsweetened) helps stop the bacteria from sticking to wall of your urethra as well as helping to flush the bacteria out of your body. Not only is cranberry juice good at helping you clear your urine infection up but if you drink a glass of cranberry juice every day can help prevent you from getting urine infections altogether.
- Eat Good Bacteria – One way you can help with the relief from the burning feeling when empty your bladder and also get rid of the bacteria that is causing your infection is to increase good bacteria in your diet such as probiotic yogurt.
After spending a day drinking pints of parsley water, today my infection is not as bad as it was yesterday and the burning sensation is bearable.
